5 Dont’s in Blog Commenting

Posted on 31. Aug, 2010 by in Blogging for beginners, Internet & Web Design, Marvelous Mondays

Getting traffic to your blog is one of the toughest task in blogging. But, needless to say, there are various techniques that emerge each day to make this task easier to you. Blog commenting, one of such techniques, which is quite old yet powerful technique that can get you readers with similar interest. This not only paves you the way to get niche readers but also helps you to establish yourself in that particular field.

There were already lot of articles, blog posts and news on Blog Commenting. So we are not getting into this. But still there are few things that are worth repeating. They are what you dont have to do when it comes to blog commenting. Here I have listed few of them, which I consider myself as very important.

Donts in Blog Commenting

#1 – Dont comment for the sake of commenting:

This is done by most of the people. When they are so excited about blogging, to get traffic, in a urge to get famous over other blogs and with other bloggers, they just comment in all the blogs, articles they even just come across. But most of the times, they have nothing to say where they will leave comments “Nice post”,”Thanks for such a good post”,etc..,

Trust me. This is one of the annoying things to bloggers. Once they can deal with it, but doing so can create an impression with the blogger that you are a spammer. So, its always good to comment when you have something to add to the points mentioned in the article, or something that you dont agree in it or something you wish to get clarified. Otherwise, dont comment. You are not there to leave a foot stamp that you stepped in their blog.

#2 – Dont argue,agree to disagree:

When you look in some of the forums, people used to have hot discussion, that will turn up into hot arguments. This makes the forum owner to ban you from the forum. Thats the same case in blogs, where he cant ban you in his blogs whereas it creates a negative impression on you and if you are a blogger, then it creates a negative image to your blog itself.

Remember it always, if you are a blog owner, each and every activity you do on other blogs and social networks influence your blog. So, creating a positive or negative image to your blog completely depends on you. So have a watch over this while blog commenting. If you can find the discussions turning to arguments, make sure to get out of it. Bloggers blog for sharing information and not for engaging verbal fights.

#3 – You dont need to be in Top Commentator’s list always:

It has become a custom nowadays, almost every blog has the top commentators widget. This widget simply displays the readers who contributed most of the comments in the blog recently. This helps the blogs to get more comments and also the readers to get noticed,(and also a home page link ofcourse ;) ). But it doesn’t mean that you can comment anything to get into the list.

Always remember first point, that comment on an article when you have something to add. If you still want to make the list, then think vastly on the topic and make your comment.

#4 – Dont stray away from the topic or make annoying comments:

People often tend to move away from the topic of article and give a comment that has nothing related to the article or that is related to some previous posts. Never ever make it. If you want to comment on some previous posts go the post and comment over there. This is not the only article that can receive comments. Also commenting Tsunami has hit Indonesia is completely irrelevant for a Tech blog. Always stick to the topic.

And when commenting, keep in mind it will be read by large number of people. So dont make annoying comments or use unpleasant words. Frame what you are going to say and say it with politeness that even your criticisms appealing to the blogger.

#5 – Commenting is not only for traffic:

This can be another version of the first point but its worth repeating. Though, blog commenting is one of the ways to generate,it is not only for traffic generating. Commenting in first purpose to express views. Mind it while commenting and dont make commenting as your next how-to-get-more-traffic strategy.

These are the very important donts in blog commenting. Comments and criticisms are always. Feel free to add your comments, but make sure you dont do the above mentioned points ;)

Some nice tips and I agree with not having to comment to be on the top commentators list. Some abuse it for the sake of having an extra link and so forth.

I would also have a point for not attacking users. There are some users who go out of their way and attack others for their comment, we need to restrain from that.

Yeah these were some good tips for comment spammer. I get lots of auto generated comment. I have installed a new plugin called conditional comment plugin and it works fine to eliminate some spam comments itself.

This has been interesting to read as I’m someone who reads blogs instead of writes blogs. Its interesting to see what bloggers are looking for when people comment on their blogs. I usually just comment if I find something interesting (like this one) but I didn’t realise that if I’m not careful some of my comments could be percieved as spam!

Sometimes arguing can be a good thing, it means that you can tell the owner and also other competitors that you provide a more honest opinion on something, your expressing what you think about something rather than just writing a post that has already been published a million times. Your content might be original and opposing which is an advantage.

Commenting is good for traffic building but, must be used with great caution if you must succeed with it.

Your #3 is not a valid for me. If someone able to be at top commentators list of John Chows or Shoemoneys blog than its like you having a sponsors link on their site and you might have 100′s of traffic just coming to your site by doing nothing.

Agreed buddy, thats why the Top Commentators widget build for. But what my intention is not to comment only for the sake of topping others. That may lead the owner to either take you from the commentators list or remove the widget itself if most of the people do so.

I am working on an article about blog commenting though it will be some weeks before it’s actually ready for publishing.

However I would add that making your comments as “personal” as possible will greatly increase their chances not only of your comments getting accepted but also of other visitors clicking the link to your site.

Use your name “Bob” rather than just your keywords (who wants to read a comment written by someone called “Best Mortgage Rates”?!).

Get a gravatar and use a real picture of yourself.

Relate your comments to your own personal experiences to date rather than general facts you may have read on other blogs or forums.

Doing this you build rapport, add value to a blog that you’re commenting on and increase your chances of additional traffic as a result.

Richard, nice points. I like the one you mentioned on giving names instead of KWs. Most of the time, I will edit the names if they had given KWs.

Good points you have given here. Do share the link with us on your article about blog commenting.

The amount of blogs that I subscribe to changes constantly with new ones becoming available that suits my needs.

There will be many other blogs that are not on my list but I find I cannot subscribe to all of them. I try to make relevant comments and appreciate the type of comments I want on my own blog.

Pick the ones that are really beneficial, like this one and follow the thread and contribute meanful comments.

I agree with you number 3. I wonder why people think that blog commenting is a competition, everyone wants to be on the top. It is great when our main purpose is to give ideas or to give a help when we comment on blogs. This blog really has great points. :)

  17. I would much rather leave a comment that made people say hmmmmmm–that guy might be up to something good. Tell me more.

Although sometimes…. I feel like just trying for a back link.

Having fun commenting….now that’s the key.
