Google gets a new look – But is it better?
Posted on 06. May, 2010 by Senthil Ramesh in Internet & Web Design, Technical Thursdays
Google has always been king of innovations, trying out new things day by day. May be that is also one of the reasons why it is always dominating in various niches. There has been a news that Google makes changes to its web page, in an attempt to make it more colorful than the existing one. But, it has not been confirmed so long.
Some JavaScripts evolved to show how the new appearance may look like and even for the past one or two months it appeared in Country Level Top Level Domains of Google (like google.co.in). Finally, the updated version is released now updated and live. But, still it seems to be in testing as we don’t get the layout always. Here are some features, added and modified, presented for those who are expecting to look at it.
Google Changed:
Google comes out with big changes in its lay-out, while people are expecting more about Google Caffeine. They did some splendid changes in its lay-out, which was known for its simplicity for years.
I would like to point out some major changes in this new lay-out,
- Static side-bar menu
- Number of results shown below query box
- The space between organic SERP and query box is reduced.
- The logo and side-bar becomes more colorful sounds they all set to give 3D effect to the users.
Replacing the earlier show option menu
Earlier it used to come at the top right side of the results page
Not a big move, Google knows why it has been done
To make the page visually appealing ?!!
Google in 1997:
And this is the best time, that we relook at the appearance of Google home page when it was evolved. It was in 1997 when it has been launched. Though, it has made some changes, year after year, the one thing that was constantly taken care by Google was its simplicity and ease of user for search. Being the latest effort of it was hiding all the options when the page loads other than search box. Take a look at the page in 1997.
The home-page in 1997, they have used very bright colors, isn’t it?
The beta version in 1999 with more option
The recent logo image, sounds they will be back to 1997 logo in colors.
The all new Google:
- The static left side bar will help you to narrow-down the search query
- I strongly feel that the prominent ‘Updates’ option will call many to look at that. So care more about your Social Media Marketing – Google will help you to get more visit than never before.
- Google now asking more questions to the users via options, by that way they tempt to give accurate results.
The Updates and discussions section is getting more hits as people always need real time results and also whats going on among people now. But those sections are made colorful now along with icons. This can make those sections easy to find, easy to use. Thats a good move from google and it hasn’t added those icons to the timeline and other results since they are less frequently used. Minimalistic approach from google.
Another Minimalistic approach is, previously, the show options menu opened in along the right side. Now, it is there always but the timeline results are minimised which expands downwards on request.
Do You Like this Lay-out?
So, what you think about this? Do you like this? I personally feel that the color of the layout is very different to me. And needless to say, it seems similar to Bing. And other features are amazing, it will helps a lot to get the exact result. So, do share your thoughts in the comments and participate in the poll about this in the sidebar.

Seems they forgot the shadows like the 1997 logo
I think the design looks much more better now, more interactive and more options

Its feel great to have your blog after a very long time. Hope you will be back in form as soon.
About Google’s new lay-out – Google should think about customizing the colour as per user’s wish. Since, I hate this new lay-out colout. I really want to change that.
To me, apart from this, I can see,

# the speed of search increased
# I can feel some changes in SERP as well
# So, I guess Google implemented caffeine with this change. Who knows this except Google? I should tweet @mattcutts to confirm my assumption

Still have to get used to the new Google look. I thought that I changed some options on my browser but thanks to your blog, I found out that Google is just trying out a new skin. Not sure if I like it yet!

Yup, I was also thinking like that only when I saw the new looks of Google. It puzzled more when it appeared sometimes and sometimes not. Guess what, now I am getting the new page in office network but not in my home network. It seems Google hasn’t finalised it yet

@Senthil, Even I thought of the same as Google yet to finalize things. But this morning I read this Danny’s blog (http://selnd.com/cGJGvi) – and shocked that Google won’t provide the option to revert the new one to old lay-out. WTF..!
I hate Google decision in this issue. But what to do – have to stuck with Google only.

“It doesn’t strong-arm people to use features they don’t want.” – From Google Corporate page.
With the refusal to offer a Hide Options button, I’d say they forgot that part of their mission statement.

I like the simple Google. The last time I saw Google, I find it very confusing cause there are so many links appearing on the left side of my monitor in Google homepage.

Google new look is good but its new version of Image Search is not at all nice. Google image has copied the version of bing image search.
Now when I search something on google image, it loads entire thumbnails which takes hell lots of time
