Microsoft Windows From 1.0 to 7

Posted on 15. Jul, 2010 by Senthil Ramesh in Internet & Web Design, Others

Almost all the services now cant survive without the help of computers. Various technologies are emerging day by day, but still the operating system plays a vital part in the computers. And as of now, most of the computers, rely on Windows platform. Thought Windows has its own pros and cons when compared with its counterparts like Linux, it definitely has travelled a mile ahead in its GUI and appearance.

But ever wondered how windows might have looked in the initial stages or how its appearance has transformed. Yes, it simply amused me, considering the major modifications that windows has made to its appearance to make it stand out of the crowd. Here are few snaps that can how it looked in the previous versions.

Windows 1.0 :

Windows 1.0

Windows 1.0 - The beginning

It all started with Windows 1.0 with difficult-to-operate UI. It was not a big problem as they people got something that can do things that humans cant do. This definitely reminds me of mainframes ?. With MS-DOS being the major platform to operate it came with lot of commands.

Windows 2.0 :

Windows 2.0

Windows 2.0

Few changes added like Calculator and Control Panel that can reduce the commands.

Windows 3.0:

Windows 3.0

Windows 3.0

Sporting a better look than Windows 2.0. Yet, a long way to go for Microsoft.

Windows 3.11:

Windows 3.11

Windows 3.11

Almost the same with previous version, with some little modifications and upgrades.

Windows 3.11 NT:

Windows 3.11 NT

Windows 3.11 NT

This can be the version most people has come to know about Windows. This is the period when computers have come popular and has come to homes for personal use.

Windows 95:

Windows 95

Windows 95

Thought NT has made its entry to common people, Windows 95 is what the kids remember as the oldest Windows version and yes me too. ‘Start’ button has been added and it can be the fore father for the resemblance we have today with the desktop and task bar.

Windows 98:

Windows 98

Better than previous versions, better resolution and user interface. This is the Windows I remember I have used first ?. MS-Paint was my favorite.

Windows 2000:

Then comes Windows 2K with better resolution

Windows ME:

Windows Millennium Edition

Windows Millennium Edition

Millennium edition. Not much difference and not huge success too. I’d say 2K was better than ME.

Windows XP:

Windows XP

Here comes our Hero. The long lasting and the most used version of Windows. Still it gains edge in performance when compared with Vista and arguably, Windows 7. Definitely, XP is the favorite for many.

Windows Vista:

Windows Vista

Windows Vista

Call it a failure or success, it definitely got applause on the major appearance upgrade from Microsoft. But it lacked performances and can not support most of the softwares. Microsoft said it was to ensure safety, but people never liked such safety not to have their favorite softwares and utilities involved. Its transparency attracted many, yet, failed to succeed in market as expected.

Windows 7:

Windows 7

Here comes the next king in Visual Effects. It just blowed away Vista and made itself more promising in the performance too. People say it boots in around 7 secs. This was the move of Microsoft against Google Chrome OS. It lives upto the promise but still XP has upper hand when it comes to the price of the Operating System.

Interesting, wasn’t it? Tell me how do you feel with the evolution of Windows and add some if I have left anything.

Windows 1.0 started making computers look cool, Windows 95 is the turning point where you no longer look back to anything not this super-cool. And now, so far, the coolest is of course Windows 7.

Wow, This reminds me of old days, windows 98′ was my favorite for the longest time. Until Xp came to the market, and i still use it to this day on some of my computers. But i believe windows 7 is revolutionary, to think how far Microsoft has gone with programming and making it even easier to use. Thanks for the article, this just put me in a good mood.
