Yes you are right, there are several interesting plug ins to do this!

Another helpful thing is to be controversal in your post, this can initiate a discussion between your readers.

Last but not least, there is a WP Plug In that generates a own page for each comment (will show up in the SE), this may increase th ebenefits of comments on your Blog dramaticaly…

i like your idea of putting these posts in parts, that way some day you can just do a roundup of the earlier part and it will be a great resource.

Yep, the best way to encourage the comments is by giving the commentator something in return, like the top commentator widget or some link love etc.
