Simple Tips for WordPress Newbies – Part I
Posted on 25. Nov, 2009 by Senthil Ramesh in Wordpress, Wordpress Wednesdays
Welcome to WordPress Wednesday.
Here we are starting with some WordPress tips for newbie bloggers. Some of this I have not known when I started blogging. Hence I wished that it will be good to share those tips for new bloggers. Lets start with four points today.
Making the post sticky:
This is one of the thing, I like about WordPress. If you would like to make one of your posts more visible over the others, you can make this using this technique. This can be done by editing the Visibility of the post, and enable the “Make this post stick to the front page”. This is extremely useful, for making a post more visible and let your visitors more attracted towards it.
Making the blog visible to the search engines:
When I have started blogging, this is the one annoyed me much. All the links in my blog were no follow and I was stuck how to disable it. I was asking many of the bloggers and luckily one of my friend helped me. You should disable this nofollow links to make your blog visible to search engines. Then only search engines can find your site, crawl and index your blog. This can be done by
Settings >> Privacy >> enable the “I would like my blog to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Sphere, Technorati) and archivers” radio button
Use less tags:
It is always good to have lesser tags then to have new tags added for each post. Adding new tag can result in newer pages which may get you into a problem of duplicate content. So before adding tags, search for the appropriate tags already used. This can be done by looking at the “Choose the most used tags in Post Tags” in order to avoid duplicate content issue.
Schedule posts:
This is another helpful thing. You can make the posts to be scheduled for publishing it later. This is particularly useful when you have prepared the post but wish to reach the readers at the later time, which would be more appropriate. I use this technique to make the particular post to be published on specified day where it will be significant.
What do you think about these points. Can I add something more here? Please share in comments.

I use blogger but have been told and have read about wordpress being better. Though I don't(rather can't) add to your given points merely due to being unknowledgable about wordpress, I would ask this question to you. Do you believe WordPress is better than Blogger?

I use both, WP and Blogger. my expirience is that WP is more Search Engine friendly, On my main WP blog´s, it takes something about 10 – 30 minutes to get a new post indexed in google, with blogger it takes much more time. Also it seems to be that wp ranks better in the serp too.

30 Minutes? How is that possible? It may take atleast five hours for me to get cached.

Sure it is. By the easy to use and plugins and themes, wordpress always rocks. Why do you still prefer blogger?

I’m confused. Doesn’t blogger also provide me with an online presence too?

Might be. But WordPress has more options than that of Blogger. It can make your blogging experience a enjoyable one.

Maybe because I started with it. And moreover, I don't write to get fame or anything. Even if I get regular comments just from a group of 4-5 friends of mine, its fine for me.

Thats fine. But with wordpress you can self host and it doesn't matter whether you do it for fame or anything. Having a self hosted website always gives you an online presence.
