Twitter – beyond 140 characters
Posted on 20. Apr, 2010 by Senthil Ramesh in Tweaking Tuesdays, twitter
Twitter has been lately becoming a powerful tool more than just social networking site. I am not saying about it is helping web masters to drive traffic and others to share news. More than that, it influences fate of many people, too. May be the that influence has brought lot of urban middle class people to support Sashi Tharoor, for his latest allegation on IPL scam.
Short is NOT always sweet
We have been advised many times, it is better to restrict yourself to fewer words and make your communication brief and clear as possible so that it will not let you in any troubles. But that’s not true in Twitter, I feel. Tharoor’s tweets are controversial most of the times, but he was the ‘darling’ of most of the people and has got more followers than Shah Rukh Khan. Sashi taken it as a medium to cast his views, often landed up in controversies. Tweets like ‘cattle class’ comment, has panned him.
Twitter – the trouble maker?
Tweets not only affected Sashi, but also some International Celebrities. Earlier, Chris Brown has closed his account saying that Twitter is just a trouble maker to him. There are even other celebrities affected by their tweets in Twitter. Hindustan Times had made a compilation of this, of five people who are troubled by twitter. HT even terms them as Twitter-troubled people.

It can be said easily that they are let into trouble only because they made such controversial tweets. But what about those like Obama and Britney, whose twitter account has been hacked, who could have suffered more trouble too. Is Twitter really turning out to be Trouble maker for most of the celebrities?
Twitter – not just micro-blogging site.
Though Twitter has been said as Micro Blogging site, it has now become a reputation issue too. It goes without saying you can understand how popular a person is, by his followers. Immediately after the news Sashi Tharoor resigning from the Council of Ministers has been announced, tweets fled up for and against Tharoor and Modi. This makes Twitter as a tool for people voicing their opinions and most of the Urban Middle class people rely on this to show their support. For god sake, let’s at least not use Twitter for casting votes and selecting representatives.
Having said this, all these controversies may create trouble to some people, or make them familiar the most advantage is definitely going to Twitter. It is gaining more of familiarity than anyone else involved. Though it is criticized in some cases, day by day users of Twitter increase exponentially.
I personally feel Twitter is not just 140 characters. But, 140 characters that can shake the world. What do you think?

I think Twitter is just full of spammers who go on spamming their link. There is no social interaction there

Agreed, but that makes it obvious that its very popular one. Isn’t it. Thats why it has become a play spot for Twitter.
